Jeremiah Johnson

posted Wednesday, 6 April 2005

Being on a Robert Redford mood, I have decided to say a few words about Jeremiah Johnson, one of my favorite films ever. Redford plays Jeremiah, a maountain man, also known (in real life) as John "Liver-Eatin'" Johnson. The movie by Sidney Pollack shows a Jeremiah that is much more tame than the real man, as any reader of Crow Killer will tell.

The appeal in the movie is the mountain spirit, the frontier, man against nature, against his destiny and above all, the great Rockies, the true star in this movie. Redford shows how great an actor he has always been, his character's unique determination expressed by his body language more than by anything else, since there are not so many dialogues in the film, only the silent power of the mountains.

I have been by the grave of real-life Johnson in Old trail Town Cemetery in Cody, Wyoming, a wonderful place to visit and maybe stay. Johnson's story and grave photo here. No kidding, it's worth the read.

BEEN PLAYING THE MOVIE SINCE THE 70's. Been down to CODY a few times to visit J.J.J. and BUFFALO BIllsGrandsons site (next grave). Usually camp in the center of CODY. Ironic that he was a CROW KILLER (at CROW AGENCY montana, naughty crow children are still warned today that JOHNSON will come 4 you, if you are not good.) AT the Battle of the GREASY GRASS(Little BIG Horn). Custer(damn his soul) had Crow as his scoutsand sent them AWAY before he rode onto the Lacota camp.( MY Great-Great grandmother(brule sioux) was there, on the WINNING side. go in peace. G.B.( British Columbia)
