Nezó, multifaceted artist from S. Tomé

posted Thursday, 21 April 2005

A beautiful painting from João Carlos Nezó, the artist I chose to represent S. Tome and Principe in the All 55 African Countries project. S. Tomé and Principe are two exotic islands in the Atlantic Ocean populated by 180.000 people. Their paradise-like beaches are mostly undiscovered by tourists and the country has a lot to grow and to offer in the future. The islands are often called chocoltae islands because their main product is still cocoa. S. Tomé is a poor country but is at peace. Oil has been found recently off its coast, something that will certainly deeply affect the country in the near future. The country's tourist site here and the main hotel (Miramar - 130 Euros for a double) here. Other places to stay include the Marlin Beach Hotel ($120-130) and the Bom Bom Island Resort ($175-185).

Nezó is an accomplished artist that didn't have to leave the country to be sucessful and still lives in S. Tomé. He was born in Angolares in 1964. A small bio:

1980 - FEEM Festival Prize.
1987 - Animal Preservation Exhibit Prize.
1988 - Portuguese Cultural Center Exhibition in S. Tomé.
1989 - Exhibition in Casino do Estoril, Portugal.
1990 - Several exhibitions, in Portugal.
1991 - Several exhibitions, in São Tomé.
1992 - Expo'92, Seville, Spain. French Cultural Center, Libreville.
1993 - Exhibition in the Palácio de Cristal, Porto, Portugal.
1994 - Exhibitions in São Tomé: Palácio dos Congressos. Centro Cultural Português.
1996 - Exhibition in the Atelier Jorge N'bourdu, Libreville.
1997 - Exhibition in the Portuguese Cultural Center, Luanda, Angola.
1998 - Special Award from the European Union in the Contemporary Bantu Art Biennal in Libreville.

The link above will give access to a gallery of other beautiful paintings, that I strongly recommend. A good site about S. Tomé here, in french but easy to browse (www.sao-tome.st).
