Mozambique is the homeland of Mia Couto, one of, if not the one, loudest voices in literature today. But Mozambique is also the home of numerous enterprises by religious organizations of all kinds, who seek to help the poor, children, the sick, war victims, famine victims, orphans, landmine victims and the like. Unfortunately there is a lot to choose from in Mozambique.
I am personally very proud to be the cousin of a 20 something who volunteered to teach the children of one of these organizations in Mozambique: the Dominican school for abandoned children of Xai Xai. After college and before starting her promising career in economics, my cousin has been serving in Xai Xai. She was supposedly to teach languages and computer skills but ended up teaching all subjects from kindergarten to 12th grade of this school of about 350 children.
She says the experience has been one of the most rewarding of her life. I hope to be able to post some photos in the future, when she comes back home and reconnects to "the world". I would also like to have her say a few words about he experience. The children of Xai Xai lack all the basics - school supplies, books, clothes... The school owns one computer with an impossibly slow internet connection. Anything anyone can send is welcome. Their contact is. Escola das Irmas Dominicanas de Xai Xai, Xai Xai, Mozambique. No links available, sorry. I will try to get more specific information in the near future. Until then, greetings to my cousin in Xai Xai!
I ended up becoming the sponsor of 3 kids in Xai Xai:
Célio Boca
Vicente Muchanga and
Michel Sebastião Moisés
Still no links, but the Xai Xai contacts are:
