I got hooked on Pelecanos (just finished Right as Rain) and current literary race issues. He has recently published Soul Circus, the third in a trilogy of Derek Stranger novels, started with Right as Rain.
Pelecanos is daring to include race as a theme in his books. Oftentimes will the main character stop and digress on things such as growing up in a certain environment, meaning of "black", black/white crime, police preconceptions, and so on. Much as been said about this on the web and out there in the press: Usa Today, Woods on the web, and so on.
Pelecanos himself has been interviewed about this: "describing is novel as an «urban western», Pelecanos says the story is based on actual events that were happening in Washington during the time he wrote the book."
Funnily enough, he also mentions that his books "are for guys". That ticked me off . (am I a non-reader?)
Right as Rain has been sold to Warner Bros. It seems Pelecanos is a winner. Too bad that will probably be the end of race as an issue in the Pelecanos' story.
Who would you choose to play Derek Strange? Personally I would go for Danny Glover , may be Morgan Freeman.
Some food for thought: Lawrence Fishburne was the first black actor to play Othello on screen in 1996. Before him, only white actors had played the role (on screen).
