I finally went to see Master and Commander this weekend and I must say I loved it. I'm a fool for sea stories, war, love, adventures, pirates, discoveries, anything will do. This film will satisfy anybody with that kind of fixation and I left the movie theater happy and thankful for having spent the last two and a half hours at sea with Captain Jack Lucky. The ships are beautiful and the scenes do convey the feeling of life on board and the taste of ocean battles. The story pulls all the ocean imagery in literature one can think of, the most obvious all the time being the big white Moby Dick that in this film takes the shape of the French Acheron. Jack is not Ahab, he is capable of listening to his conscience, played by his naturalist surgeon and friend, Dr. Stephen Maturin. The mad pursuit of the Acheron can be interrupted and the sanity and lives of all onboard can be saved.
I've read Roger Ebert's review after seeing the film, out of habit and of curiosity (do I agree with him this time?) and I must say I do subscribe to every word he says about this film. A final word to Patrick O'Brien, at this time rating very high on my wish list at Amazon!
