Richard Linklater has been working on the film A Scanner Darkly, based on the book of the same name by Philip K. Dick.
"Perhaps the most unnerving drug novel ever written, as well as an industrial-grade stress test of identity, this novel explores the perverse symbiosis of cop and criminal, observer and observed.", as Amazon.com describes it, it will probably become one of the most unnerving drug films ever directed, specially considering Linklater will once again use live action photography overlaid with advanced animation process he already used in the fantastic Dazed and Confused. Linklater uses his own screenplay (if at all curious about the story, check out the Amazon book preview or the 130 pages of a script written by Charlie Kaufman)
The cast seems to fit the story: Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson and Rory Cochrane. More about the shooting of the film here. A Scanner Darkly is expected to be released on September 16, 2005.
