Imagine this: totally deprived of all your senses, hovering in a dark nothingness, you are still conscious and will have to remain like this for the next ten years. A troublesome image and this is how the short story I hope I shall arrive soon, by Philip K. Dick begins. The short story ispart of "An Anthology of writing on the subject of memory loss" called The Vintage Book of Amnesia by Jonathan Lethem.
But the man is still connected to the controlling ship who is to take him to a distant planet on a ten year space voyage. The ship can communicate with the man and to make the long period endurable decides to feed him with information from his past. When this fails, the machine decides: "This is a very neurotic person. I am having an awful lot of trouble finding happy memories." and the solution seems to be feeding the man with images from the arrival at the desired destination.
This is a horror voyage to the brain of an unhappy man and a great short story. I still believe the development does do justice to the incredible beginning, but a must read anyhow.
