Nawal, the voice of Comoros

posted Saturday, 9 April 2005

Nawal is the voice of Comoros in her own words. I´m back to the African countries art project. The country I chose this time was Comoros, 3 little islands in the Indian Sea off Mozambique and a former French colony. The population is about 600.000 and speaks both Arabic and French. Most of the people are Sunni Muslim. This is one of the poorest countries in the world, 60% of the people live below the poverty line. I'm not sure about this, but most former French colonies seem to have ended up really bad, attracting famine, poverty, war, genocide... Maybe it is just my impression.

Surprisingly enough, the CIA Factbook says there are 5000 internet users in the Comoros. The country letters are .km! Comoros also intends to be a tourist destination. One of my favorite travel guides is always Lonely Planet, that gives you a good introduction on the country and tells you a bunch of reasons why you should visit.

I chose Nawal because her music is really nice to hear. The link here goes to a sample of Al Djalilu, nice sounds. And also because her name seems to be linked to another Comoran living in France, the photographer Aminata Djegal, author of the Nawal photo here. Actually, author of all of Nawal photos on her website.

Despite the poverty, it is good to know that some artists have found their way of expression, in France, that is a fact, but at least they are still out there. It would be so good if all these people who can only show their best work when they emmigrate could only do so in their own countries.

A good photo collection here, the website from where the photo below came.
