The House of a Thousand Doors

posted Tuesday, 9 August 2005

A Casa das Mil Portas (The House of a Thousand Doors) is probably the coolest writing project I have seen online in the longest time. The person who conceived it and made it work is Nemo Nox, the first Brasilian blogger and the most versatile cultural geek.

The idea was, in his own words (apologize deeply for the translation!):
The House of the Thousand Doors is a project with hundreds of microstories written by Brasilian and Portuguese bloggers. A microstory is, at least as we define it, a story writen in fifty words or less, in prose. If it doesn't seem much, it's because it is really isn't much. To write a microstory is a literary challenge, an extremely economical attempt to tell or sugest a whole story. A microstory, and possibly the most famous of all, is the one by Guatemalan writer Augusto Monterroso: "When he woke up, the dinausaur was still there."

Once in the website, the visitor has to click "abra uma nova porta/open a new door" for the new story to appear. There's of course a thousand of them, contributed by a thousand people. Unfortunately, there is no English version. We'll just have to wait for the English counterpart of this incredible House.
