Some time ago I had the misfortune of spending about a minute of my precious time watching a preview of Dumb and Dumberer. I don’t provide any links because I urge everybody not to see this movie.
I believe glorification of stupidity, teen marketing and poor arts funding are all connected in a cause/consequence chain. America is a family friendly country, meaning adults consume kiddie products in kiddie places. Adults leveled by the teen norm. What’s even worse is that this kind of marketing has nothing to do with real children, it just creates the idea that teens are shallow and ignorant. On top of it, teen marketing assumes that being knowledgeable and intelligent turns you into a joke. Prof. Bickford clearly defeated by the Ozbournes.
Why is Matrix suited for a 12 year old and Bowling for Valentine isn’t? The arts strive apart and beyond teen world but their funding is sponsoring teen activities instead. The arts do not fit the teen mold.
There is a very odd contradiction in all of this. On the one hand teens
are fauned upon by marketers like no other age group and so they have
incredible power in that sence. On the other hand, though, they are
sterotyped into this mold of a group who has no interest other than sex,
violence, and superfluous "fun." It's kind of a vicious circle as those
who have more sophisticated interests often get ostracized because they
aren't conforming to the interests they are "obviously" (since these are
all the messages that come out of mass media) supposed to have.
