George Enescu is one of the most important musicians of the 20th century. He is also greatly overlooked by most of the music world to the exception of Romanians who are proud of their outstanding composer (Listen to fragments of his Rapsodies 1 and 2 here). Romania celebrates Enescu every year at the George Enescu Festival that is now taking place in Bucarest and other Romanian cities. Amongst the participating orchestras this year are: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, Santa Cecilia Orchestra, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Stockholm Phiharmonic Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. The Festival started in 1958 and has now become an important event for a smaller country like Romania.
It is a good time to visit and if you happen to be near Brasov, take a tour of Bran Castle, better known as Dracula's castle.
