Continuing the mountain theme I started in my previous posting and combining it with the funeral of the Polish Pope all over the news these days, I am compelled to mention Zakopane, a dream vacation to come. Zakopane is in the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains (the other side being in Slovakia) and is a wonderful place to visit, Summer or Winter, depending on wether one prefers skying or hiking. Both Seasons are equally wonderful and, being in Poland, the town has the advantage of being a cultural and historical center as well. The Museum of Karol Szymanowski can be visited there, for instance. (To hear a little bit of the music free, go here and here). The Pope, of course, has been there, and the history of the place is rich and runs deep.
In the towncenter I found Hotel Litwor, a four star hotel offering a indoor swimming pool, a bit on the expensive side. I also found the Rawa Inn, a beautiful place, on the cheaper side but with a website in Polish only.
A gallery of beautiful photos of Zakopane in the Winter here. More great photos here, Summer included, but watch for pop-ups. And here. And definitely the best and most complete gallery here .
